For security purposes, Nanit products are designed to not connect directly to open networks or networks with captive portals. We care about your privacy and do not want your data to be shared on any unsecure networks.
- An open network is a wifi network that does not require a password.
- A captive portal is a web page that the user of a public-access network is required to view and interact with before access to the WiFi network is granted. Captive portals are typically used by business centers, airports, hotel lobbies, coffee shops, and other venues that offer free WiFi hotspots for Internet users.
If you would like to use your Nanit Baby Monitor or Sound + Light at a hotel or other location that does not have a password-protected WiFi network, we recommend the following:
- Ask the hotel if they have a hidden network for guests with baby monitors that require password-protected wifi. Some hotels have this in place, otherwise, some may be able to create a password-required network if they don't have one set up already. There is always the possibility that others are connected to the hotel wifi network as well, so that choice is up to your discretion.
-
Use a travel router to broadcast the hotel's connection. You should be able to set up a travel router to have the same username and password as your home network to help Nanit connect more seamlessly. Here are the steps to use Nanit on a captive portal network:
- Connect the travel router/access point to the public wifi network that has a captive portal.
- Using a computer or a mobile device, connect to the WiFi network of the travel access point.
- Confirm connection to the captive portal window.
- Connect your mobile phone to the travel access point.
- Pair your Nanit on the travel access points network.
If you are unable to access a private network or use a travel router, you may be able to use your phone as a hotspot for Nanit. Please note that you may experience problems resulting from data caps, overage charges, poor cellular signal, and connection speeds. For these reasons, we recommend reaching out to your service provider to determine if your hardware and service contract can sustain a dependable internet connection.
Sound + Light Machine Travel Tip: Before you travel, we suggest setting up Favorites that you can cycle through using the top button on the sound + light. This way, you won’t need to connect to wifi and can maintain your consistency on-the-go.
